Flexible polymer modified thick layer coatings - what exactly are they?

It used to be so easy. You had bitumen and that was fine. But now: Flexible polymer modified thick layer coating (FPD). A bit of a mouthful and difficult to remember. All you have to do is remember AQUAFIN-RB400. That's the rapid cementitious waterproofing product you need from SCHOMBURG.

What are FPDs such as AQUAFIN-RB400?

In simple terms, an FPD is a type of hybrid waterproofing as it is a cementitious thick layer coating that combines the properties of mineral waterproofing slurries (MDS) and bituminous thick layer coatings (PMBC stands for: Polymer Modified Bituminous Thick Coating). Key advantages of FDPs include the speed and versatility of application. Where bitumen is only used in areas in direct ground contact, AQUAFIN-RB400 is suitable for almost all waterproofing details in new and existing buildings - as well as in exterior and interior applications.

What properties do FPDs such as AQUAFIN-RB400 have?

Cementitious waterproofing products such as AQUAFIN-RB400 are characterised by their versatility. A major advantage in practice is the reactive drying. This means, no matter whether it is raining, hot or cold: Thanks to the reactive binding, AQUAFIN-RB400 dries almost regardless of the climate and it does so particularly quickly: FPDs such as AQUAFIN-RB400 can be overcoated after just three hours, enabling rapid construction progress that would be unthinkable when using bitumen waterproofing. To find out more about this, you can also take a look at our blog article "All leaks are water-tight? Ways of waterproofing buildings: Is the bituminous or cementitious reactive method the best?", in which we compare the two types of product. Be it a new building or renovation: High quality cementitious waterproofing products such as AQUAFIN-RB400 also offer fully tested protection against radon.

Where can FPDs such as AQUAFIN-RB400 be used?

In a new build, cementitious waterproofing like AQUAFIN-RB400 can be used in the application areas Walls in direct ground, Wall plinths and under rising walls as wall cross-section waterproofing.

In renovations, cementitious waterproofing such as AQUAFIN-RB400 can be used as a vertical waterproofing against ground moisture and non-standing seepage water, standing seepage water and water under pressure, as well as a horizontal waterproofing against non-standing water on slab surfaces. These are also the classic areas of application for cementitious waterproofing.

Which substrates are FPDs such as AQUAFIN-RB400 suitable for?

AQUAFIN-RB400 can be used as a solution for exterior and interior waterproofing. In refurbishment, it is also possible to overcoat old and firmly adhering bitumen. A further advantage of the product is that it can be plastered or painted over. These two properties are particularly advantageous in splash water areas at the wall base. This means that the area above ground level can be designed quite flexibly and the connection to floor-level elements such as patio doors is also reliably possible with the inclusion of system components such as joint tapes. SCHOMBURG offers a tried and tested system here for the waterproofing of Ground-level elements.

How can FPDs such as AQUAFIN-RB400 be applied?

AQUAFIN-RB400 can of course be applied by hand using the trowelling and screening method. The smooth consistency of the material offers optimum processing and application properties and enables straightforward work progress. Furthermore, AQUAFIN-RB400 is perfectly suitable for application by means of the spray technique. Whether using a peristaltic, screw or airless pump - AQUAFIN-RB400 can be applied with ease thanks to its optimum material properties. Application by way of the spray technique not only offers economic advantages with larger properties, small and medium sized surface areas can also be rapidly waterproofed depending on the machine technology. Rapid construction progress is therefore guaranteed. We shall be happy to advise and support you with your next project. Get in touch with us here. We look forward to hearing from you.
